Pianist Jocelyn Chang came to the United States after making her acclaimed piano concerto debut in the National Concert Hall in her native Taiwan. In Taiwan, she was a prizewinner in numerous competitions including the Taiwan National Piano Competition, the SinoPac Young Artist Piano Competition, and the Taiwan National Chamber Music Competition. Equally accomplished as a double-bassist, she received awards in the Taipei Double Bass Competition and the Taiwan National Double Bass Competition. Her performances have been broadcast nationally in Taiwan. Since coming to America, she has been heard in chamber music concerts, collaborating with musicians and faculty artists of such institutions as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Pacific Symphony Orchestra, and the USC Thornton School of Music in innovative programs that have ranged from the complete Beethoven violin sonatas to new music of emerging Asian composers. She is a member of the lotusflower new music project. Recent performances have included a concert tour of the Midwest featuring music of Cambodian composer Chinary Ung. Dr. Chang has recorded for the Austrian ein Klang label.
Chang holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree with Distinction from the University of Southern California in Piano Performance with a secondary concentration in double bass. She received her Master of Music degree from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the National Taiwan Normal University, where she majored in Piano Performance with a minor in Double Bass Performance. She has also studied at the Belarusian State Academy of Music in Minsk, Belarus. Her musical mentors have included Daniel Pollack, Stewart Gordon, Boris Slutsky, Kevin Fitz-Gerald, En Wang, Ren-Jen Wang, and Zoia Kocharskaya.
In addition to performing, Dr. Chang is equally committed as an educator. From 2010-2015, she taught at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) and served as Director of Keyboard Studies as well as Faculty Advisor of both the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) - CSUSB Collegiate Chapter and the Piano Society at CSUSB. She was also Executive Director of the Distinguished Artists Series at CSUSB. She has taught master classes at Northern Illinois University and for the Music Teachers’ Association of California and has been frequently invited to serve as judge for competitions such as the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Young Artist Piano Competition, United States Open Music Competition, and Liana Cohen Music Festival Competition. Dr. Chang joined Pasadena City College as a full-time piano faculty member in 2015 and is passionate about dedicating herself to the Piano Department and students at Pasadena City College.
Pianist Phillip Young, hailed by the Boston Globe as a “pianist of skill and fantasy,” is a widely acclaimed soloist and chamber musician, having performed in North America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. In recent seasons, he has performed in cities throughout the United States, including New York, Washington D.C., Seattle, and at international venues in Switzerland, Norway, Germany, the Czech Republic, Japan, Namibia, Cape Town, Salzburg and Paris. He has performed in such venues as the Seattle Opera House, Tokyo’s Opera City Recital Hall, the utopian arts community, Arcosanti, Arizona and the 13th century Buddhist temple, Enkaguji, in Kamakura Japan. He made his New York Carnegie debut with the St. Florian Piano Trio, an ensemble that has performed the complete Beethoven, Brahms, and Mozart piano trios in one of Tokyo’s most prestigious recital halls, Bunkakaikan. He has been seen and heard on broadcasts from NHK Television, Japan, Namibian National Radio, KUSC and KPFK in Los Angeles, and WGMS Washington D.C.
Equally known as a singer’s pianists, he has performed with singers associated with the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera and English National Opera, and as Assistant Conductor, has prepared productions for the Salzburg Festival, Opera Pacific and Los Angeles Opera.
Dr. Young is a fellowship recipient to the Tanglewood Music Center, Music Academy of the West, and Banff Centre for the Arts, the Aspen Music Festival and the Mozarteum, Salzburg, and is an alumnus of Peabody Conservatory (MM) and the University of Southern California (DMA). His teachers have included Leon Fleisher, Ann Schein, Jerome Lowenthal and Lotte Lehmann’s accompanist, Gwendolyn Koldofsky. As a teacher he has been awarded the Pasadena City College Outstanding Lecture/Performance Award. His students have been accepted to such prestigious music programs at Harvard University, Eastman School of Music, University of Texas, Austin, Boston University, San Francisco Conservatory and the University of Southern California. His piano ensemble students from Pasadena City College were prizewinners in the International Six/Eight Hand Piano Competition in Marktoberdorf, Germany. He has given master classes at the Shanghai Conservatory and universities in California and Oklahoma. In addition to being head of Keyboard Studies at Pasadena City College, he teaches piano at Pomona College and has held both adjunct and guest teaching positions at Biola University Conservatory of Music, and University of California, Irvine.
